RICHARDSON ADULT LITERACY CENTER

Student Policies

1.  STUDENT ACCEPTANCE

Adults, who live or work in Richardson or in RISD and need the services that can be provided by RALC volunteers, will be accepted as students.  Those who are outside the geographic boundaries will be referred to programs near them.

2.  TUTOR MATCH

Students will be matched with a tutor of the same gender unless there is a compelling reason to match otherwise.  The Executive Director will make this decision.

3.  PLACEMENT

The Executive Director or her agent will determine appropriate placement.  If changes are necessary, the student will be notified and will be placed at the top of the waiting list.

4.  APPROPRIATE SERVICES

Every effort will be made to assist students in obtaining appropriate services. Conversation groups may be formed, small groups may be used, and so forth.  If referral is indicated, the Center’s representative will be proactive in helping the student find what the student needs.

5.  PROGRESS RECORDS

Students may have access to any records the Center may keep on their progress and may make written comments to be included with those records.  Student records will not be accessible to unauthorized people.

6.  TERMINATE

The Center may terminate a student at the discretion of the Executive Director.  Reasons may include non-attendance, not doing homework, taking advantage of the volunteer or any similar activity showing lack of respect for the Center and its volunteers.

7.  INSTRUCTION GOALS

Students and tutors will develop goals for instruction.  The tutor, Executive Director, and/or student may agree for voluntary termination when goals have been met or there is evidence that the student no longer benefits from this instructor or circumstances prevent continued participation in the program.

8.  NEW TUTOR REQUEST

Students may request a new tutor and will be assigned one as soon as an appropriate match can be made.

9. RIGHT OF CONFIDENTIALITY

Students have a right of confidentiality. Access to student records is limited to those with direct educational interest without the written consent of the student. Any pictures or use of the student’s name that the Center may use for public relations will only be used with the consent of the student.
