I’m continually impressed and humbled by the kindness and dedication of the staff, board members, volunteers, and students. You are the inspiration behind my get-it-done attitude and drive. My goal is to lead RALC into financial stability and sustainability so that we may offer adult literacy classes, citizenship classes, and workforce development programs for current and future generations of families. To reach that goal, we must build relationships within the community and remind people that RALC not only positively impacts individuals and families, but also employers and the community as a whole. I believe this so passionately that I haven’t been able to suppress it. I have talked about our value and mission at the teacher kick-off, at the RALC Board retreat, at Women in Leadership meetings and luncheons, at Richardson Chamber of Commerce events, at the Region 10 Title III event, at the Dialogue Institute, at a grant-writing workshop, and at every business social I could possibly attend in the last two months. I am pleased that so many organizations and professionals are onboard to support RALC and partner with us in new ways. (I’ll save the details for later.) What is even more impressive is the willingness of the staff, volunteers, and RALC Board to jump in and do more than ever before to help acquire more funds and build relationships with the community. Because of everyone’s efforts, we are off to a wonderful start in 2024. Please help us keep the momentum going by spreading the word about our annual Murder Mystery event on April 13th. The proceeds all go to RALC, and we need the additional funds for more classes and to expand the Career Bridge program. Thank you for your continued support of RALC, and stay tuned for updates. Please know that I’m always available to listen to new ideas, concerns, or possible partnerships. I may be “on the go” a lot, but I will always make time for RALC students, volunteers, and sponsors. Ann Banks RALC Executive Director Student Spotlight Dmytro RALC Level 4 A student, Dmytro, is originally from Ukraine. He and his wife, Maryna (also a RALC student) came to the United States in 2021. In Ukraine, Dmytro was a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and crisis manager for a large clothing manufacturer. He has a doctorate in Economics and Cybernetics. ​ When Dmytro came to the United States, his English was limited. He shared, “I knew that coming to the United States, I was starting from the bottom. But it did not break me.” Dmytro started working as a handyman and began taking the Level 3 B class with RALC. He remembers that when he started the 3B class, his English was at “25 percent of what it is now.” Dmytro reports, “That class and RALC changed my life. The teachers were amazing.” Their dynamic and engaging style helped Dmytro improve his ability to communicate in English by at least 50 percent, he says. In June of 2023, Dmytro decided to open his own handyman business called Alsolut Handyman, LLC . Alsolut stands for “Alternative Solution.” Dmytro shared that he had a colleague who could translate for him on the job so that he could communicate with customers. Unfortunately, that colleague moved away at the end of 2023. Dmytro realized that because of his classes at RALC, he could communicate with his customers. He actually didn’t need a translator! Alsolut Handyman now employs 12 people, and Dmytro is determined to keep coming to English classes with RALC. ​ Dmytro shared that RALC has helped him reach his goal of starting a business. “I feel stronger. I can understand more and I know that I am learning a lot.” Featured Program Citizenship Class The Spring 2024 semester marks the 4th consecutive collaboration between RALC and the immigration law firm of Berry, Appleman, and Leiden (BAL) to offer a six-week Citizenship Test Preparation course for adults in Richardson and surrounding communities. Funded by BAL and developed and coordinated by RALC, this course provides adults seeking U.S. citizenship with thorough preparation for the naturalization process and the specific content of all aspects of the citizenship test. For the second semester in a row, the class is available in both an in person and online format, enabling more students to participate in the format that works best for them. Facilitated by both BAL attorneys and paralegals and RALC volunteer teachers, the class enables students to build their confidence and feel well-prepared to succeed in their goal to become a U.S. citizen. A survey of the Fall 2023 class included the following positive feedback from students: ”It’s a big help with my English and understanding the country where I live now (its history and its structure)” “The [text]book is great. I am more confident now than before.” Former Citizenship Class student Victor Davila, who successfully passed his citizenship test after taking the course in Spring 2023, will be speaking to this semester’s students at the final classes on March 19 (online) and 20 (in person). Victor will share how the class helped prepare him to successfully pass the U.S. citizenship test and how becoming a citizen has impacted his life. Volunteer Spotlight Alina Dam Before the Richardson Public Library was under construction, Alina would study there between her classes at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). She regularly saw flyers advertising opportunties to volunteer to teach English with the Richardson Adult Literacy Center (RALC) program. Last summer, when she had some free time, she applied. ​ Alina is currently a thrid year student stuyding neuroscience at UTD. She plans to go to medical school, but she is open to other opportunities such as research or teaching. Started tutoring little kids in high school. Never really had experience teaching adults, and wanted to broaden her horizon and have better communication with adults. ​ Enjoy teaching and helping other people learn and having their ah ha moments. ​ Overall my volunteer experience has been really rewarding. She told her friend, "This is the most fun experience I have had. Not only do I have an impact on students lives every week, but everyone is so supportived. I've never felt so supported in a volunteer organization." ​ I see student Domitlia speaks up in class more or that Efran is writing more. Their confidence is growing because of the supportive environment that my partner teacher Mark and I provide. They feel free to ask questions. They ask more questions that show that they are engaged and learning. ​ Last semester was Mark's first time ever teaching because I had tutoring experience Never worked with a co-teacher for an extended amount of time. We bounce ideas off each other. We incorporate new activites. We know what we are both good at. I normally do the MCAs, I grade the tests really fast, he comes early and set up. Both of us are good at leading and asking students to read the direction and sharing their answers. ​ build interpersonal skills with adults older than me. UTD and RALC are close to each other. It was convenience and make an impact. ​ My parents and grandparents are immigrants who came from Vietnamese. Her mom learned English from someone, so Alina wanted to pay it forward. Her mom is a hairdresser and she needed English The man who taught her was very foundational to her. He wanted her to be nurse. talking to clients. mom owns her own salon it's Lee's HairPro on Arapho. Grandparents also learned English. Grandma was a teaching assistant at a school and had to learn English. Other grandma was a dental assistant. All of them speak English. English was Alina's 2nd language. Work at a cardiologist office and has an opportunity to speak with clients in Vietnamese. Also studied Spanish in high school. ​ Mark and Alina taught 1A last fall and now teaching 1B, so they still have many of the same students like Victoria, Efran, Lorena, etc. They have become a lot more confident. They tended to speak in their native tongue more offten last semester, but they are now trying to share and explain in English. Previously they used Google translate, but they don't do it at all anymore. ​ I was able to ​ Lorena gave Mark and Alina a gift with a mug and owl ornament and a card with a note that I'm giving you this owl because my family calls me an owl in spanish, not only because of my big eyes but because of my desire to learn. Ann Banks Executive Director Ann supports and advocates the RALC mission, team, and students by enthusiastically building partnerships with community leaders and seeking additional revenue sources and opportunities for growth. Ann’s experience as a high school English teacher, upper elementary principal, alternative school director, college professor and administrator, corporate trainer, leadership coach, and executive leader have primed her to lead the charge as RALC continues its fourth decade serving Richardson and the north Texas region. Ann’s passion to serve others began in the classroom, but her passion to serve RALC began after volunteering as a facilitator for Career Bridge workshops. The dedication and organization of the staff, the determination and appreciation of the students, and the obvious need for and benefit of helping others communicate inspired Ann to commit to the RALC mission, team, and students. ​ Contact Ann Banks at director@ralc.org Carson Childress Program Coordinator Carson coordinates RALC’s English as a Second Language programs, including curriculum development, teacher training, student assessment, and teacher support. Andrea Hamblin Operations Manager & Volunteer Coordinator Andrea Hamblin coordinates RALC’s volunteers, from recruitment to training to placement to ongoing support. In 2017, she moved to Richardson and joined RALC as a volunteer teacher. As someone who grew up overseas and spent time learning languages, Andrea understands the struggle and is passionate about helping others overcome cultural and language hurdles. Katelijne Lefevere Student Success Coach Kat is a multilingual social worker with a background in workforce placement and medical social work. She started teaching with RALC as a volunteer in 2017 and fell in love with teaching. Kat coordinates student outreach and registration and also facilitates RALC’s Career Bridge Program which provides students with job search training and information about career paths. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Kat lived and worked in rural Ecuador for two years. She understands how difficult it can be to learn a second language and navigate a new culture. Kat is passionate about supporting students as they work to improve their language skills and find meaningful employment. Originally born in Belgium, Kat speaks Dutch, Spanish, English and some French. Kat lives in Richardson with her husband and two sons. ​ Contact Kat at students@ralc.org . Gabrielle Pise Communications Coordinator Gabrielle is a Dallas transplant with a passion for empowering her community, highlighted by her service to non-profit organizations for over 10 years. New Student Registration DID YOU MISS REGISTRATION? Are you interested in taking English classes? Please do this: Complete the Adult Student Information Form ; You will receive an email with information about upcoming conversation classes and New Student Registration dates. Adult Student Information Form Spring 2024 Registration CLOSED We are no longer registering and enrolling students for the Spring 2024 semester. Registration is over. Our classes are full. ​ WHEN IS REGISTRATION? Registration events take place each fall in early A ugust before the fall semester begins and in early January before the spring semester begins. There is no late registration. Once classes have started, we can't add new students. ​ Please complete the Adult Student Information Form to receive information about upcoming registration dates for English classes. ​ WHO CAN REGISTER? Adults (18 years of age or older) living in North Texas who need to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) are invited to attend a registration event. All new students must attend a New Student Registration event in order to enroll in RALC ESL classes. ​ WHAT HAPPENS AT REGISTRATION? At each New Student Registation event, all new students will go through the following process: Sign in - Write your name, email address, and phone number on a paper sign in sheet. Complete an application form - Each student will complete an online application form. Take a speaking and writing test - Each student will meet with a trained assessor who will guide them through a speaking and writting assessment. This will allow us to determine the student's English language proficiency and place the student in the correct class level. Enroll in class - Once we know the student's level of English, we can show the student the class schedule options available for that level. The schedule changes each semester. Pay the materials fee - After a student has enrolled in a class, he or she will pay the $35 materials fee. The fee can be paid by cash or credit card. The fee helps cover the cost of Zoom accounts, class handouts, books, teacher materials, etc. The student will receive a receipt. Please keep the receipt and be prepared to show it at class during the semester. ​ WHEN ARE CLASSES? ESL classes are only offered in the spring (January to May) semester and fall (August to December) semester. The English classes meet twice a week for two hours each class period for a total of 15 weeks. Most classses meet in the evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There are a few daytime classes available, but not every level will be available during the daytime. The class schedule changes each semester. ​ IN PERSON CLASSES Most in person classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ​ ONLINE CLASSES Most online classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Online classes are only available for intermediate and advanced students. ​ WHERE ARE CLASSES? Classes take place at various locations in the City of Richardson or nearby in Dallas. RALC partners with local libraries, schools, and community organizations to offer in person classes. Locations change every semester. There are also a few online classes available for intermediate and advanced students.

Conversation Classes The Richardson Adult Literacy Center (RALC) offers English conversation classes to adults living in North Texas. There are three different levels available: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The classes are offered in person and online. All classes are led by an instructor. Classes are FREE! No registrat ion requred. Show up for as many classes as you are able to attend. There are no tests, no homework, and no books. Please note, there is no childcare provided. There are no classes during the week of Spring Break, March 11-16. Career Bridge The Career Bridge program is for adults who are ready to enter the workforce via a career path. RALC offers this program to adult students to help them gain valuable job search training and knowledge about career paths. Our Student Success Coach and Career Bridge volunteer mentors help students select a career path, navigate resources to start or enhance an entrepreneurship, or prepare to enter higher learning or vocational training. Participants acquire skills such as building a resume, drafting a professional email, interviewing in English, using word processing software, applying for jobs online, budgeting, and workplace norms. Training on an online learning platform also strengthens students’ digital skills while complementing their core coursework. ​ For more information, email students@ralc.org. English Conversation Classes English Conversation Classes are available to those wanting to practice their speaking and listening skills. A facilitato r will lead students through the discussion material. Conversation classes are available year-round. Classes meet weekly for 1 hour each class. Learn More ESL Book Club ​ ESL Book Club is for upper level students who want to improve their English language acquisition skills through group reading. The Book Club facilitator will lead students through pre and post reading exercises such as vocabulary review and reading comprehension exercises, as well as taking turns reading the text aloud during the 1-hour session each week. DIGITAL SKILLS READY @50 ​ The DSR@50+ program is free for individuals who are 50 years of age or older. The goal is to create a community of seniors empowered with the digital literacy skills they need to thrive. Classes are held at various locations throughout the community. ​ Individuals interested in classes can sign up by doing one of the following: Call the RALC office at 972-644-5119 Email programs@ralc.org Citizenship Test Prep Class ​ The Citizenship Test Prep Class is a 6-week class that is for those who are wanting to take the Citizenship test. This class meets for 2 hours each week and is for those with an advanced level of English speaking, reading and understanding. You must have a green card and have lived in the US for at least 5 years. Learn More Advanced Writing ​ Advanced Writing classes are available to those wanting to practice their writing skills. A facilitator will lead students through the writing material. This class is available for students in levels 3 and up and is offered in both the fall and spring. Classes meet for 1 1/2 hours each week. ​ Individuals interested in classes can sign up by doing one of the following: Call the RALC office at 972-644-5119 Email literacy@ralc.org Class Policies 1 Class Attendance Regular class attendance is important for learning. A student will be dropped from the class after: 3 consecutive absences; 4 or more absences from classes during the semester; Students should have at least 45 hours of class time to take the final assessments. 2 Class Sizes Class sizes are limited for the best possible learning environment. Waitlisted Students will be invited to join after the 2nd week of class if space becomes available. New students cannot be added after the 3rd week of class. 3 Electronic Translators No electronic translators are allowed during class.

News Weather Cancellation The Richardson Independent School District (RISD) is closing all schools and offices tomorrow: Tuesday, January 16. RISD schools may or may not be open on Wednesday, January 17. For this reason, RALC has cancelled the New Student Registration events that were previously scheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday. RALC is working to reschedule the New Student Registration events for later this week. As soon as we have a new date and time for New Student Registration, we will let you know. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We're Hiring Join the team! Executive Director The Richardson Adult Literacy Center (RALC) is in search of a dynamic and visionary Executive Director to lead the organization. Reporting to the Board President, the Executive Director will provide strategic direction and program oversight. RALC is dedicated to providing comprehensive literacy programs to adults, fostering community engagement, and addressing adult literacy issues. Responsibilities: Program Oversight: Oversee and support the Volunteer Coordinator, Student Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and Success Coach to ensure the effectiveness of RALC programs. Manage and support data collection and entry functions for continuous program improvement and enhancement. Fundraising Management: Supervise all annual fundraisers, working closely with the Board to generate new fundraising ideas. Research and identify opportunities for grants and other funding proposals, including writing grant proposals or supervising this function. Encourage donations, memorial gifts, and organizational gifts; evaluate "in kind" gifts. Develop and distribute program-end reporting to grantors and other funders. Community Liaison: Attend civic/community events and meetings to promote and represent RALC. Raise public consciousness of adult literacy issues. Collaborate with local nonprofit and literacy-related groups, fostering beneficial relationships. Financial Management: Manage cash flow for RALC, including donations, deposits, and disbursements. Oversee monthly bookkeeping, including bank reconciliations and financial statements reviewed/approved by the finance committee. Board Collaboration: Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board and various Board committees. Prepare, implement, and manage the annual budget approved by the Board. Facilitate the implementation of the strategic plan. Administrative Functions: Oversees and supports office staff, including volunteers and part-time staff that supports the daily operations of the organization. Ensure the RALC office is clean, safe, and well-organized. Order supplies and materials to support staff, teachers, and students. Oversee file management and records retention. Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, nonprofit management, or a related field; or adult literacy experience. Skills and Experience: Five years of experience managing volunteers and/or employees is strongly preferred. Effective communicator with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds Strong public speaker. Must be able to plan and organize effectively, managing budgets efficiently.
